Project Profile: American Peptide Company, Vista, Calif.

2002 Contract Value: $499,000.00
2008 Contract Value: $212,300.00

In 2001, American Peptide Company (APC), www.americanpeptide.com, a pharmaceutical peptide and protein research and manufacturing firm, purchased a new 35,000 square foot shell building to be used as their new manufacturing laboratory with support and administrative offices. A&F Electric, Inc. was selected to be part of the design & build team and provided the electrical design, engineering and construction for this multi phased project. The original phase I, completed in 2002, involved the build-out of approximately 60% of the interior space leaving the balance for future expansion. This project included the following:

  • Upgrading the existing SDG&E service from 800A to 2500A.
  • Replacing the existing 800A MSB with a new 2500A MSB.
  • Electrical support for a 600A 480v chiller and auxiliary equipment.
  • Provide 800A of emergency back-up power with a new 500KW 277/480v generator and automatic transfer switch system.
  • Provide class I division II electrical installation in a H3 occupancy chemical storage area.
  • Class 1000 and class 10,000 cleanroom manufacturing areas.
  • Pharmaceutical laboratories and support areas.

After a recent corporate purchase by Otuska Chemical Co. Japan in 2008, APC was ready to expand their cleanroom manufacturing areas and refrigerated storage areas. A&F Electric, Inc. was again selected for the design & build team. After the design, electrical engineering and plan check review process was completed, electrical permits were pulled and construction on the new class 1000 and 10,000 clean room manufacturing area began. This recent three phase portion of the project needed to be completed while APC continued its current manufacturing operations as well as maintaining their state and federal certifications. The new 2008 phases included the following:

  • Phase I includes the relocation of the building restroom facilities.
  • Phase II includes class 1000 and class 10,000 clean room manufacturing areas, two new walk-in refrigerators with redundant refrigeration equipment, support of a new 600A 480v chiller and its auxiliary equipment and a second electrical room for six (6) new panels and two (2) transformers.
  • Phase III includes support laboratory areas and a manufacturing area with a raised mezzanine equipment area.

2008 Phase I, II and III were completed in May of 2009.
